A message from the Prez: 18-19 October

Howdy Y'all

Well we had an awesome practice in the wet and wind yesterday, despite just 10 players, and reminded me how much I love the grit and challenge of the winter season. I know it's been a strange few weeks recently - not having any tournaments lined up is always strange for us after our manic Summers season. We've also lost several players, and had difficulties getting into an indoor venue, so things have been a little up in the air. So with this in mind I feel it's time to hold the AGM pretty soon so we can all get a chance to re-direct our efforts, and get the club back to full strength.

So I'm thinking we'll make the weekend of 18/19 to be a Frisbee Bonanza! Mash and I are coming up with a programme of activities to give us a chance to introduce KTT and KO! to each other – certainly some fantasy mix-up, indoors and outdoors (they have two indoors sessions, we have our outdoor session), probably some mac-line, maybe some DDC... This is an opportunity to hook in some Freshers to KTT, to show KTT who we are and what we do, to encourage them to play and train with us – and hopefully inspire them to want to be as good as Sammy Vile! In the past several people have told me that they’ve found us to be a little intimidating, so let’s do our best not to be! Mash and the exec are doing a great job over at the uni and we ought to try to support them as best we can, so this would be a great way to do that. The itinerary of what’s going on will be up this week.

Then, in the evening after all the comedy shenanigans, 43b Station Road West will be hosting the AGM for all those interested in what’s going on at Kent Ultimate, from 6-8pm (TBC), then everyone is warmly invited to our “Housewarming/AGM/TQs birthday/KTT-KO” party!

Sunday we’re in the park for training at 11 for outdoor followed by indoor…

I’d love it if everyone could get right up for this! We turned down the Sublime-run tournament so that we could integrate our two teams, so let’s get lots of Ultimate in, and lets get hammered!

Guys, I think a certain kent player gets quoted in the most recent Clip Of The Day. It's kind of hard to hear, as he is quite far away, like a foot above the cameraman while commenting, but he gets his message accross

Kent Marketing

Posted by Whippet on 15/09/08 at 17:28:12

OK. So the students are returning, schools are back, we're losing a few of our juniors and old students. It's time to begin a recruitment drive. We've been lucky that word of mouth has been sufficient recently. However we're getting to the point now where we're going to need to bring in some fresh blood.

Plan of attack.

The way I see it there are some clear areas where we can get some new peeps.

JUNIORS
We are currently without enough players to have a junior team. This can be remedied. There are several ways we could do this. One is to put up posters in all the schools in Canterbury. I've attached a possible poster. Yes, it's me! It's just a rough draft. I'd love it if someone else was able to come up with something better, I just thought this is was the minimal info, and the most exciting picture I could find without looking very hard! I think a poster and flyer campaign has to be the start for this one. I have a few other ideas on this but this is the sensible start...

STUDENTS.
Mash and I had a bit of a meet and he's clearly got the KTT recruitment under control. We're hopeful that we can have a few more sessions together than last season - get a bit closer.

Christchurch. Yes, I'm still banging on about getting some Christchurch students to play. It seems to be an untapped resource for us. Again, I have a similar poster campaign for them too. Hopefully we can get some of them down to our training and there'll be enough of them that they can carry the torch themselves. This is going to be a massive project and it has kind of crept up on me. Freshers week is this week, but I'm not panicking - there is plenty of time for us to get some people together to form a team.

SENIORS.
I have no idea where else we can get fit people from. I'm thinking another poster campaign - hit up some sports clubs (like we've talked about before).

What do people think on the poster front? Any other ideas?

Lost shorts

Posted by danknapp on 02/09/08 at 18:06:31

Sup peeps,

I think I might have lost a pair of black lookfly shorts at training on thurs. I brought a change of clothes because I knew we were going t'pub, and now can't find the ones I took off then anywhere.

They are the only ones I've got, until I can bitch Zim into posting me my old ones back.

TUESDAY TRAINING CANCELLED

Posted by Whippet on 01/09/08 at 14:00:16

I am knackered (as you can tell from my monotonous Mixed Nationals post!). With this in mind we will be cancelling our Tuesday practice this week, resting everyone for the weekend. We'll be back at training on Thursday in preparation for the big one, the final outdoor tournament of the season, the last KO! tournament some will be playing for a little while. So let's get prepped, let's get fired up and let's take it to Nationals. I'd love to see a massive turnout on Thursday.

Furniture? Furniture!

Posted by tequila on 29/08/08 at 10:38:19

Hey,

If y'all own some furniture which you don't want any more, or you'd rather have money for crack or whatever, then get in touch with Whips, Kate, Dan or I. We will also give you the pleasure of moving it into our house, then probably breaking it and we'll try to sell it back to you.

The next four weeks y'all

Posted by Whippet on 14/08/08 at 00:03:52

Hey y'all!

Well it's been a bit of an unsettled fews weeks since our last competitive tournament, but we need to regain our focus, build a head of steam, create some momentum and work towards Mixed Nationals and Nationals. Between now and these two consecutive tourneys we have Brighton Beyond and some are going to Copa the following weekend. Which means we don't have any weekends between now and then to focus, train and practice. This means we only have Tuesday and Thursday trainings to get our focus on. Did I mention focus? Anyhooo, can we all try to get to as many week day practices between now and then. Besides it's more focus when we get to hang out with all of y'all. The Real John Lianos will be in town next thursday. I've commandeered the selection duty as Captain for Nationals, and I will be picking this fairly soon - you know I hate to leave anyone behind so I am sorry if you're not selected. And whilst we will be training with a very real goal, I hope those unselected players will help to work hard to push and improve us all.

As Captain it's also my job to prepare people. Another reason I'd like people to get to as many practices as possible is because I have a few things I'd like to work on which we'll have to split over the next few weeks. I'll come up with a list of things I'd like to cover tomorrow (it's getting late  ), but if anyone else feels they'd like to cover something, no matter how simple or complex it may seem, speak to me or wack your ideas up here. I am really excited about Nationals - basically a tour event but better and more important. I'm not sure if peer pooling occurs, which might mean we get to challenge a couple of top teams - anyone know? It's also going to be pretty tough - we're ALL going to need to work on our fitness. I'm going to add an optional few laps round the Bev after training (8pm) followed by some pushups, situps and squats. I'd obviously prefer it that everyone does them, but I'm realistic and not going to dictate. Can we try to get to training as early as we can (I know it can be difficult).

Yeah Nationals - Bring it. Let's get excited! Let's want it! We'll have a full strength team, a full spirit team and basically I want us to be even better than we were at tour zero. We've all learnt loads since then.

Finally, I'd also like to hear from any of the juniors if they learnt anything particularly useful whilst at worlds (except bumping, pushing and fouling like Sockeye or Furious George).

MONEYS

Posted by Whippet on 17/07/08 at 14:56:53

People of Kent!

Over the last few weekends we have been to several tournaments (sunburn, MT2 and MT3) and I haven't had full payment from people, including transport costs. You all know I'm useless at counting, collecting and reminding you all (Treasurer Biscuit has been playing for other teams at these events!). I don't think it's too much to expect each individual to remember to bring money to tournaments or at the very least to remember to pay up when one gets back. I know that no one is deliberately not paying - they've just forgotten or have promised me and haven't had the cash yet. I'd like that cash in soon please y'all. Please think hard about whether you definitely paid me. I'm still rather funding the club (due in part to my own naivety and incompetence). I like that we have a relaxed attitude to paying, but we might have to introduce some new rules, maybe implement payment before we leave to ensure we (I) don't get boned, start writing moneys down (hassle and faff at the end of tournies when everyone is desperate to leave and has spent all their cash) or we might have to start adding profits to make it worth people's while to collect the moneys. I'll have a think about a new policy, but please have a think in the mean time! GIMME THE MONEY! Our club accounts are depleted (mostly due to moneys tied up in paying for future tournaments) and I can't afford to buy the discs at the moment until we get more moneys...

GB Discs

Posted by AdamOfGreyskull on 03/06/08 at 13:24:52

I mentioned this to some of you at training - here's the message from Dale (gb junior coach):

All,

the GB Junior Open squad have invested in a batch of unique Great Britain discs for sale over the next few weeks before we head out to grab some bling for the country! As I'm sure a lot of you can appreciate, travelling to Worlds is an expensive business, especially so for the Junior squads. The sale of these discs will provide much needed finances for a fantastic cause - many of these players come from underprivileged backgrounds and with your help, we can fulfill a dream that a lot of them have really struggled to make possible so far.

At £10 a disc, you'll be helping 21 kids travel out to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity in one of the hotbeds of world Ultimate.

So, loosen your purse strings and come and find me this weekend at Mixed Tour 1! I'll either be floating around the TD's area, watching Chevron/Cottonopoli s Kettle Club/Catch Those, or in the nearest cafe!

They're fantastic looking - adorning the GB logo you'll inevitabely have seen floating around by now and a link to our sponsor Ultimate Outreach, a Merseyside based Ultimate coaching company founded by several ex-Juniors who have been spreading our sport into schools, colleges and youth groups in the Merseyside area for over two years now.

I'll be at Mixed Tour 3 (Birmingham, 12/13 July) as well as Junior Outdoor Nationals (Sutton Coldfield, 21/22 June), don't miss out on this opportunity to not only own a great looking disc but support the development of our future superstars.

Dale Walker
GB Junior Open Coach

So yeah, he's got GB discs to sell for £10, which is a pretty good price for an ultrastar, and he can offload them to me at our next training session, so if anyone would like to buy one let me know on the forum and we can sort it out.

Subject: Re: juniorultimate UKUA Junior Outdoor Nationals results

Just to let you know - it was the Kent lot who cleared the back field.

2008/6/24 Andrew Vaughan akv1976@yahoo.co.uk:

Hi All
UKUA Junior Outdoor Nationals 2008 took place in North Birmingham at the weekend, and was a success despite the rain and then wind that battered us over the 2 days. (If it's any consolation to those that were here, it has been fine and fairly still since you left - I think you bring the weather with you!) It was the biggest Junior Outdoor tournament in the UK yet, with 27 teams attending. The Junior game is expanding (in terms of number of teams and players), and improving (in terms of standard of play) month by month at the moment. This is shown not just in the total number of teams at the weekend, but fact that only one of the teams in the top 3 this year finished in the top 8 last year - indeed Kent didn't even have a Junior team to enter 12 months ago!
So 'Good Work!' to all the coaches and players who are working so hard with their teams to achieve this!
Huge thanks to all those that helped over the weekend - setting up, clearing up, getting water, Kev and Tom for the schedule, Gaynor Tracy and Claire for the catering, Sutton Rugby Club for the venue... and all of you who played for sorting out the litter before you left - when I went out onto the back field after the presentation it was spotless, and I've rarely seen that at a tournament. Thank you!
There is a fair bit of lost property which I will try and find the time to sort and catalogue tonight, and email out later on. On this subject, is the issue of discs - some people seem to think that a disc lying around at a tournament is fair game to pick up and take home. I know that 3 discs (one of which was meant for the MVP of the final) were taken from where my stuff was in the foyer, and a couple of other people have enquired about missing discs - and there are none in last property. Taking away a disc that isn't yours is stealing. Don't do it.
Here are the results. Teams were asked to give 3 Spirit votes, giving 3 points to one team, 2 to another, and 1 point to their third choice. In brackets after each team name is the number of Spirit votes they got. Every team got some votes, and a low number doesn't necessarily mean you are a poorly spirited team - every game might have been fantastic and you might have been everyone's fourth choice with little to choose between all the teams. But I think it is worth recognising and celebrating those teams that did rack up a number of points.

KO! in the media

Posted by Whippet on 23/06/08 at 18:27:41

As y'all know I've been working on getting some publicity to swell our ranks with newbies. The plan is to put a push on school age type people who are just about to start their summer hols round about nowish. It's a good way for them to spend their summer, and ideal for getting them ready for next season. Kent Touch This under Mash's guidance will have a new influx in September/October and I've said we'd be happy to help where possible, including potential joint trainings (we could split up KTT/KO! for parts of the session - but more numbers has to be a good thing!). I'm going to come up with a plan to create a team at Christchurch Uni - plan unknown (and not sure how much commitment/resources/time this would involve).

Then the council rang me today - they are having a sports fair in August - details attached. I've provisionally booked us a space and a small pitch space down by the maze to have a display match and do small tester session. The Herne Bay one is a possibility only. More info to follow as and when.

I was rung up by Kent.tv the local internet TV station who are considering doing a thing on us for their show. i've highlighted all the relevant X factor characteristics of our players, the story of the club, the players, the juniors, the Mixed, the tour info etc... We'll see...

Flyers and posters will follow soon!
